John Maddock (b. 1807) owned a number of different business, starting in 1830, with different partners, eventually trading on his own under the name John Maddock. John & Martha Maddock had four sons - John (Jr) and James who became partners in the manufacturing business, and Thomas and Henry, who both managed the export business in the United States of America. In 1855 when John junr was taken into partnership, the business traded as John Maddock & Son. From around 1870 the other son, James, was taken into partnership and the business traded as John Maddock & Sons.  In 1871 John Maddock (snr) retired, by which time the census records that the business employed 208 people. This successful pottery company survived two world wars and numerous recessions as a large scale manufacturer of mid-market domestic and catering earthenware. It also exhibited at the 1904 St.Louis Exhibition, USA, where it was awarded a gold medal.  The plate from which this pendant was made does not identify the specific pattern, and I haven't been able to find out the name. It is very similar in pattern to 'Royal Ivorene', but isn't labelled as such. Judging by the backstamp, this plate was probably manufactured in the 1940's, possibly earlier.
